Situated in Springfield, where the 16th President practiced law, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum stands as one of the top tourist destinations in the Midwest. Launched in 2005, the museum occupies an entire downtown city block and goes beyond the static exhibits found in traditional museums. Rather, visitors gain a dynamic, immersive experience that reflects the input of three dozen leading Lincoln scholars worldwide. The journey begins in the simple log cabin Lincoln lived in as a boy and takes the visitor, through a combination of storytelling and interactive technologies, through the future president’s formative years. This culminates in the second part of the journey, which places the visitor in the White House of the 1860s, at a time of profound national crisis. The museum experience is supplemented by a library designed for serious scholarship that comprises some 12 million documents, books, and artifacts. Lincoln Collection artifacts prominently displayed include original copies of the the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the 13th amendment, which outlawed slavery.
